Probably the best of the public golf courses in Maine is the Pleasant Hill Golf Course in Scarborough. This is a nine hole course that is one of the more challenging courses that you will find. The course is surrounded by forest and is located in the popular vacation spot Scarborough.
The Links Poland Spring is one of the oldest courses in Maine having been opened in 1893. It is located just outside of the town of Auburn which is a popular golfing destination because of the all the courses in the area. Located along the coast this is a very popular course with both the locals and tourists alike. There is a lot to do in the Auburn area besides golf which makes it a popular place to visit.
The Apple Valley Golf Course is another one that is located in the Auburn area. This one is a nine hole course and a fairly short one at that. It is popular with beginners because it is a short course but make no mistake it is also a fairly challenging course as well. There is no need for a tee time, just show up and you will be able to play. The course is always well maintained and the green fees are very reasonable.
The Sable Oaks Golf Course is located in Portland which makes it a popular choice since it is easy to get to. It is an eighteen hole course and it is very long. It is not a good course for a beginner; your score will be very high unless you can hit the ball a long way. The course is always well maintained and the green fees are quite inexpensive for the quality of the course that you are playing. The only downside is that it is located near the airport so you will have landing airplanes flying nearby.
The Samoset Golf Course located in Rockport is another of the outstanding public courses in Maine. This one was opened in 1902 and is set amongst some of the most spectacular scenery that you will find on any course. It is not a particularly difficult course by most accounts so it is a course that most golfers can play. It is always maintained to the highest standards. The only downside is that it is a fairly busy course.
