Maine is a great place to plan a golf trip; the question is when should you go? Obviously you are not going to play golf in Maine during the winter, there will be a lot of snow on the ground and the courses are all closed anyway. The best time to go is usually at the end of summer and into the early fall.
It is generally agreed that the best time to play golf in Maine is the early fall. This is because the weather is usually still pretty nice if a bit cool. The fall is also nice because the leaves on the trees are starting to change which really makes for some spectacular scenery. You will also find that the courses are not as crowded as they would be during the summer months so you will be able to play with fewer people to get in the way.
While fall is the best time to play golf in Maine you do have to be careful if you are planning a trip to Maine to play golf. Once the snow falls most of the courses will close for the season. Once you get into the fall the first snowfall can come at anytime. It would be unfortunate if you planned your trip only to find that it starts snowing as soon as you arrive. It is a good idea to plan your trip for the early part of the fall to reduce the chances of this happening. You may also want to find out when the courses closed in the previous years so that you will have an idea of when the first snow fall may occur.
The spring is an excellent time to golf in Maine as well. In general the weather conditions are similar to the ones that you will find in the fall, although it is more likely to rain. The biggest difference however is that you won't get to see the turning of the leaves. That being said the spring has its own attractions. As with playing in the fall you have to be careful since the courses don't open until the snow is gone which could range anywhere from early March to late April. It is best to schedule a trip for later in the spring.
There is really no reason that you shouldn't play golf in Maine during the summer. This is of course the time when most people play. In fact that is the only real downside; there will be a lot of other people playing at the same time as you. The only other downside is that it can get a little bit hot during the summer. That being said compared to other golfing destinations you will probably find that the temperature is not all that bad. Playing in the summer also means that you will be in Maine during peak tourist season which can be both good and bad.
